Wedding Etiquette:
Sending Wedding Invitations

How long before the wedding should invitations be mailed?

Ideally wedding invitations should be mailed about six to eight weeks before the date of the wedding. As this generally gives prospective guests enough time to check their diaries, RSVP, and if necessary to organize travel, accommodation, and a babysitter.

Decisions about wedding stationery often depend on whether a wedding is to be a formal or an informal event. However when choosing wedding stationery it's a good idea to keep in mind the following points.

1. Although some couples like to enclose an RSVP card and a stamped self-addressed envelope with their invitations, this is not essential.

2. Wedding invitations with an RSVP included in the wording are also available.

3. Would you prefer your guests to RSVP using their own stationery.

4. Would you like to give your guests the option to RSVP by telephone.

When mailing wedding invitation letters - to avoid delays - a good tip is to have, depending on their contents, one or more letters weighed.

Also to ask the Post Office about hand-canceling.

Traditional Wedding Invitation Etiquette.

1. Wedding invitations are addressed by hand.

2. An invitation is placed into an envelope print side up - so that when the envelope is opened the writing is visible.

3. Enclosures such as an RSVP card, reception card and a map are neatly arranged in order of size on top of the invitation - ie. smallest item on top.

4. An RSVP card is slipped under its envelope flap.

5. If an invitation is a folded card or a folded sheet of paper then enclosures are neatly tucked inside.

6. To protect an invitation envelope and its contents the envelope is often left unsealed, and, apart from the invitees names, unaddressed. It is then placed (the same way round) into an addressed second envelope. The outer envelope is then sealed.

Other invitation traditions that you may like to continue include placing a piece of tissue paper, or for a contemporary feel vellum, over the invitation, and the use of English spelling.
